Overview

What is a Speed Converter?

A Speed Converter changes a rate of motion from one unit to another. It is useful for travel notes, running and cycling comparisons, weather data, classroom problems, engineering examples, and spreadsheet cleanup.

Speed is distance over time, so the unit label matters. Miles per hour, kilometers per hour, meters per second, feet per second, and knots all describe motion, but they fit different contexts.

How the Speed Converter works

Enter a speed value, choose the source unit, then choose the target unit. The result updates automatically when the amount or either unit changes.

The current Speed Converter code converts through meters per second as the shared base unit. It multiplies by the source unit rate, divides by the target unit rate, and shows seven significant digits.

The unit list includes common road, metric, imperial, knot, sound-speed, light-speed, and Mach references. For Mach, use the listed reference carefully because real speed of sound varies with conditions.

Speed conversion examples

If a speed limit is 60 mph, mph to kmh gives about 96.5606 km/h. If a road sign says 100 km/h, kmh to mph gives about 62.1371 mph. If a physics problem gives 10 m/s, m/s to mph gives about 22.3694 mph.

For marine speed, 20 knots equals about 23.0156 mph. For a classroom Mach reference at 20 C, Mach 1 is listed as 343.6 m/s in the current unit data.

Common speed conversions and use cases

These common speed conversions match the searches people use most often.

Popular conversionFormulaExample
MPH to KMHmph x 1.60934460 mph = 96.5606 km/h
KMH to MPHkm/h x 0.621371192100 km/h = 62.1371 mph
MPH to m/smph x 0.4470455 mph = 24.5872 m/s
M/S to MPHm/s x 2.2369362910 m/s = 22.3694 mph
Knots to MPHknots x 1.1507794520 knots = 23.0156 mph
Feet per second to MPHft/s x 0.68181818230 ft/s = 20.4545 mph
KMH to m/skm/h / 3.672 km/h = 20 m/s
Mach (20 C) to m/sMach x 343.6Mach 1 = 343.6 m/s

Speed conversion is useful when the same movement is described for different audiences.

SituationUseful conversionsWhy it helps
Driving and travelmph to kmh, kmh to mphSpeed limits and route notes differ by country.
Physics homeworkkm/h to m/s, m/s to mphMany formulas expect meters per second.
Running and cycling datamph to kmh, m/s to kmhTraining apps and reports may use different units.
Marine and wind speedsknots to mph, knots to km/hBoating and weather references often use knots.
Engineering examplesfeet per second to mph, m/s to ft/sTechnical examples may mix imperial and SI rates.
Aviation referencesMach to mph, Mach to m/sMach depends on reference conditions, so labels matter.
