Overview

What is a Fuel Consumption Converter?

A Fuel Consumption Converter changes fuel-use and fuel-economy values between units. It is slightly different from normal unit conversion because some units measure fuel used per distance, while others measure distance traveled per fuel volume.

That means higher MPG is better, but higher L/100 km means more fuel used. The tool helps translate those values so you can compare vehicles, trip estimates, and data rows more clearly.

How the Fuel Consumption Converter works

Enter the amount, choose the source fuel unit, then choose the target unit. The result updates automatically.

The current Fuel Consumption Converter code uses meter per liter as its base representation. Distance-per-volume units convert proportionally, while reciprocal units such as L/100 km, gallon per mile, and gallon per 100 miles use a constant divided by the value. A zero input returns 0.

The output is formatted with seven significant digits. The swap control reverses the units and uses the current result as the new input.

Fuel consumption conversion examples

If a vehicle is rated at 8 L/100 km, L/100 km to MPG gives about 29.4018 MPG (US). If a listing says 30 MPG (US), MPG to L/100 km gives about 7.84049 L/100 km.

If a spec says 12 km/L, km/L to MPG gives about 28.2257 MPG (US). Keep US and UK MPG labels visible because the gallon size changes the result.

Common fuel consumption conversions and use cases

These common conversions use the US MPG convention unless the row says UK. Notice that L/100 km and MPG are reciprocal, so the formula divides by the value.

Fuel economy can be confusing because better efficiency may mean a bigger number or a smaller number depending on the unit.
