Data Storage Converter

A Data Storage Converter changes a digital size or capacity value from one unit to another. It is useful for file sizes, storage devices, bandwidth notes, technical writing, IT documentation, classroom examples, and spreadsheets.

One key detail: storage labels are not always used the same way. The current tool includes binary-style units such as Kilobyte [kB] based on 1024 bytes, and separate decimal choices such as Kilobyte (10^3 bytes). Choose the unit label that matches your source.

The current Data Storage Converter code converts through bits as the shared base unit. It multiplies by the source unit rate, divides by the target unit rate, and formats most values with seven significant digits.

For very small values below 1e-6 or very large values above 1e12, the component switches to exponential notation with six decimal places so the output stays readable.

64 bits to bytes gives 8 bytes. 12 bytes to bits gives 96 bits. If you choose decimal units, 2500 MB equals 2.5 GB. If you choose binary-style units from the main MB and GB labels, 2048 MB equals 2 GB.

That difference is why the exact dropdown label matters. For product capacities, decimal units are common. For operating-system style calculations, binary-style values may appear.
